This summer, 34 Explorers and 11 Leaders from Shackleton Explorer Scout Unit embarked on an unforgettable 10-day international expedition to Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Swiss Alps, the expedition combined adventure, challenge, personal development, international friendship, and plenty of fun.
From the moment the group arrived in Switzerland, Explorers were immersed in a packed programme designed to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, and independence, while creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Exploring the Alps
One of the highlights of the expedition was the opportunity to experience some of Switzerland’s most spectacular mountain scenery. Explorers travelled by gondola to Oeschinensee Lake, where they enjoyed breathtaking views and the famous mountain rodelbahn.
The older Explorers also took on the challenging hike towards the Lötschen Glacier, navigating mountain trails and experiencing the incredible alpine landscape first-hand. Another memorable day saw Explorers hiking along the Kander Valley, gaining valuable hillwalking experience while learning about route planning, pacing, and mountain safety. The younger Explorers were able to experience a high level day by scaling Alpshelehubel.
At Winteregg climbing area, Explorers pushed themselves outside their comfort zones, developing climbing and belaying skills while supporting and encouraging one another throughout the day.
Developing New Skills
The expedition was about much more than adventure activities. Throughout the trip, Explorers had responsibility for camp life, campsite maintenance, and working together.
Key skills developed included:
- Teamwork and leadership
- Overseas public transportation
- Camping and outdoor living
- Problem solving and resilience
- Communication and decision making
- International friendship and cultural awareness
Many Explorers achieved personal milestones, whether completing challenging hikes, conquering a fear of heights during climbing and high ropes activities, or simply gaining confidence by spending ten days living and working as part of a large expedition team.
International Scouting at KISC
As one of the world’s most famous Scout centres, Kandersteg provided opportunities to meet Scouts and Guides from across the globe. Explorers took part in international campfires, village celebrations, and campsite activities, experiencing the true spirit of global Scouting.
The traditional international campfire was a particular highlight, bringing together young people from many different countries through songs, games, and shared experiences.
Days to Remember

- Swimming in Kandersteg
- Exploring the local town and surrounding area
- The KISC campsite programme and carnival
- A day at Brigerbad Water Park
- The High Ropes Course in Interlaken
- A self-led hiking day where Explorers planned and completed their own routes
- Blausee Nature Reserve
- Campfires and evening activities with Scouts from around the world
The expedition concluded with a journey back through Bern and Geneva, bringing home tired but proud Explorers with countless stories to tell.
A Huge Thank You
A huge thank you goes to all 34 Explorers for embracing every challenge and opportunity throughout the expedition, and to the 11 volunteer Leaders whose months of planning, preparation, and support made the adventure possible.
The success of the expedition was built on the enthusiasm, determination, and teamwork shown by everyone involved.
