On Saturday 3 October 2026, two teams from Shackleton Explorer Scout Unit took on the challenge of the Downsman Hike, one of the South East’s toughest Scout hiking events. The event includes routes across the South Downs, with the most demanding classes covering up to 55 miles from Bignor Hill to Eastbourne.
Class E Finishers
One of our teams entered Class E, a challenging 38-mile route from Steyning Bowl to Eastbourne designed for experienced Explorer Scouts. Teams of four work together throughout the event, demonstrating navigation, endurance and teamwork skills.
Despite the demanding conditions, the team successfully completed the course and achieved a Class E finish, earning their well-deserved Downsman medals. This was a fantastic achievement and a testament to their determination and resilience throughout the day.
Outstanding Effort in Class B
Our second team took on the formidable Class B challenge, a 55-mile route from Bignor Hill to Eastbourne aimed at older Explorer Scouts with advanced hiking experience, fitness and endurance.
The team completed an impressive 53 of the 55 miles, demonstrating exceptional commitment and perseverance over one of the event’s toughest routes. While narrowly missing the full distance, their achievement is something they can be incredibly proud of and reflects the determination shown throughout the challenge.
Proud of Every Explorer
The Downsman Hike is renowned for testing physical endurance, navigation skills, teamwork and mental resilience. Both Shackleton teams represented the Unit brilliantly, supporting one another and embracing the challenge from start to finish.
Congratulations to all the Explorers who took part and represented Shackleton ESU so well. Whether achieving a Class E finish or completing 53 miles of the demanding Class B route, every participant should be immensely proud of their accomplishment.
Well done to everyone involved in Downsman 2026! 🥾🏅👏
