Hot Air Balloons

Last week at Explorers, we attempted to make hot Air Balloons out of an assortment of items. After much planning and construction, we headed outside for some test flights! On this occasion, none of the designs were capable of flight and a few even ended up on fire! At the end of the meeting we also invested 8 new members to the unit!

Sailing – Supeta

7 of our Explorer ventured out on Supeta today. Unfortunately the weather was too windy to head out to sea however the Explorer still tool the boat out for half a day learning to steer, dock and drive backwards under engine power. Hopefully next time we will have some better luck! A few photos are below.

End of Term BBQ

As is tradition, we celebrated the end of the summer term with a BBQ and water games. At the start of the meeting, we allowed the Cubs to take on the Explorers in a game of musical hoops which quickly descended into the Cubs soaking the Explorers thoroughly with their water guns! We also played a few other water based games before much food was consumed cooked by the leadership team. We hope you all have a great summer and see you next term.

Volleyball

Last week, Explorers played Volleyball at Grattons Park. It was nice to see everyone back post exams finishing. However, lots more practise would be needed before any of them started playing at a competitive level as it was rare for more than 2 or 3 consecutive volleys!!!

Climbing and Abseiling

Last night Shackleton ESU visited Copthorne Prep School for an evening of climbing and abseiling. We also invested one of our new Explorers part way down the abseil tower! Thanks to Alaric, Ivo and Russell who all came along to help instruct for the evening.

Rounders

On Monday 15th, Shackleton had a game of rounders at Grattons Park. Teams were formed evenly however the results were very one sided even after the rounders pitch was expanded to resemble a 400 metre running track!

Monopoly Run Live 2023

On Saturday 4th March, 24 Explorers set out to London for Shackleton’s first attempt at the monopoly run. Fuelled by much coffee, sweets and fast food, the Explorers competed against 7000 other scouts to try and be crowned champion. Many steps were walked in a day and the Explorers all looked very worn out by the end of the day! All of our teams were involved in Game 35 and the results were as follows: Game – 35 Game Position Overall Position Team Scout Group Bank Balance 1 201 Fluffy Sheeps Shackleton ESU £3992 2 246 Blackberries Shackleton ESU £3561 3 …

Archery and Fire Lighting

Over the past 2 weeks, the unit split into 2 and did fire lighting and archery at Stanford Scout Campsite. The explorers started fires using a variety of techniques including flint and steel, exothermic chemical reactions and electricity! Congratulations to Nathan who was our most accurate archer!
