Expedition Skills

Our Explorers recently took part in an engaging Expedition Skills Evening at Shackleton ESU, designed to build the knowledge and confidence needed for successful expeditions. The session focused on the key practical skills that every explorer should develop before heading out into the hills.

Throughout the evening, Explorers rotated through a number of activity bases, each covering an essential part of expedition preparation.

One of the core skills covered was writing route cards. Explorers learnt how to carefully plan a route by recording important details such as grid references, bearings, distances, timings, and checkpoints. Understanding how to create a clear and accurate route card ensures that teams can navigate safely and stay organised during their expedition.

Navigation skills were also a major focus, with Explorers practising effective compass use. They learnt how to take and follow bearings, align maps correctly, and work together to maintain accurate direction while travelling. These skills are vital when navigating unfamiliar terrain.

Another activity base explored expedition stoves, including both Trangias and multi-fuel stoves. Explorers learnt how these stoves work, how to set them up safely, and the importance of good stove safety when cooking outdoors. The session also highlighted the benefits of different stove types and when each might be most suitable.

Shelter was another key topic, with Explorers learning how to correctly pitch tents and understand the different parts of a tent system. They practised setting tents up efficiently and discussed how to choose suitable camping spots while considering safety and environmental impact.

The evening also covered suitable expedition equipment and rucksack packing. Explorers discussed what items are essential for an expedition and how to organise their rucksacks so that weight is distributed comfortably and important items remain easily accessible. Good packing techniques can make a significant difference when travelling long distances.

Finally, the group explored the fundamentals of campcraft, including campsite organisation, teamwork, and looking after equipment. These skills help ensure that expeditions run smoothly and that teams can live comfortably and responsibly in the outdoors.

It was a highly practical and informative evening, with Explorers gaining valuable experience that will support them in future expeditions. A big well done to everyone who took part and showed great enthusiasm while developing their expedition skills.
