Hot Air Balloons

Last night Shackleton ESU came together for another packed evening of activities, creativity, and planning.

Hot Air Balloon Challenge

The highlight of the night was our hot air balloon building challenge. Using nothing more than straws, bags, wire, and a choice of fuels, patrols worked against the clock to design and construct their very own miniature flying machines. There was a lot of trial and error (and a few singed corners!), but some really inventive designs took shape.

A huge congratulations to Tom Payne, who managed to build the only balloon that successfully took flight! His team’s balloon rose gracefully above the hall – a great example of persistence and teamwork paying off.

Downsman Hike Route Planning

The unit also began preparations for the Downsman Hike, marking out routes across the South Downs. Everyone got involved in discussing possible strategies, ensuring we’ll be well prepared for the challenge ahead.

Silver DofE Expedition Planning

Our Silver Duke of Edinburgh groups made solid progress on their expedition planning. From menus and kit lists to route cards and safety checks, the teams are starting to pull together everything they’ll need for their upcoming adventures.

Chief Scout’s Award Progress

Finally, we spent some time going over where everyone is on their journey towards the Chief Scout’s Award. It was great to see how much progress has been made already, and to share ideas on how to tackle the remaining requirements.

All in all, it was another evening that balanced fun, practical skills, and preparation for the challenges ahead. Shackleton ESU continues to impress with its creativity, teamwork, and determination.
